Reader’s Workshop - We will continue our efforts to help students
make reading part of their lives. The focus will be on essential comprehension
skills through text. These skills include making inferences, predicting,
summarizing, synthesizing, monitoring comprehension and characterization.
Writer’s Workshop
- Narrative Writing-- Students
will continue working on true stories with the goal of a published piece by the
end of the quarter.
Words their Way- The first few weeks in October we will begin
developing a routine of word study. After routines are established students
will begin working with words that are just right for them.
Math- We will introduce and practice the basic
multiplication facts from easiest to hardest: 5’s, 2’s, 9’s 10’s, 1’s and 0’s.
The harder facts 6’s, 7’s, and 8’s will follow in our next unit. When first
learning the facts students use count by’s with diagrams to give multiplication
meaning and to connect symbols with words and equations. Later, they will look
for patterns, rules, or strategies that will make learning the facts
easier. Students will also learn how
multiplication and division are related, and use math drawings and equations to
represent and solve word problems.
