Coaching Your Child's Reading

How to coach your child's reading at home when he/she comes upon a word not known...

1.  Count to three
2.  Ask, "Do you need coaching or time?"
     *  What strategies have you tried?
                         *  Find the base word
                         *  Flip the sound

     *  Go back and reread. (STRARO - Stop, Think, Reread, Ask, Read On)
     *  Skip the word and come back.
     *  Chunk the sounds together.
     *  What word makes sense?
     *  Look at the pictures and/or captions.
3.  Say, "I am going to sound this word out with you."  or  Say, "I am going to tell you the word."
